“malalani” north shore, oahu new build and landscaping
This project began in early 2021 with the purchase of land on the North Shore of Oahu. The concept was to build a luxury home and landscape to make the house feel like it was built above and surrounded by a mature tropical garden. The name “Malalani” meaning “Heavenly Garden” is quite fitting for this property. The building permit process took more than 2 years, which included working closely with an Expeditor. Understanding and planning for the permit process is critical in Hawaii. During this time, it was important to organize and complete those items that would not affect the building of the house or violate any permits. The landscaping began with a 6 foot lava-rock wall surrounding over 350 linear feet of the property. In the summer of 2021, over 100 individual palms were planted, with many requiring a crane truck for installation. Several items such as windows and doors, custom design lighting fixtures, plumbing fixtures, appliances and custom furniture had lead times from 9 months to a year. In presenting our conceptual idea to our architect, we played a very active role in the design elements of the house. The proportion of outdoor versus interior living space was top of mind in the design. All finishes were designed and procured by us. Some items include all decorative lighting fixtures, plumbing fixtures, appliances, windows and doors, all cabinetry and hardware, all tile and Italian marble countertops; exotic woods and natural materials for flooring, walls and ceilings, both exterior and interior. We feel very blessed that our team consisted of an incredible talent of contractors and craftsmen. The standards were set high and achieved by our “hui”. Several contractors and tradesmen who were on site commented that the construction of this house was “old school”, referring to the quality and craftsmanship in the use of materials, which were uncompromised. As owners, we were on site nearly every day after framing. After 16 months from pouring the foundation, the house was complete. In making such an investment in a home, we understand how important it is to plan, organize, direct and re-evaluate resources throughout the building process. As owners of several projects, we can appreciate the concerns and sometimes the anxiety of owners making a multi-million dollar investment here in Hawaii. We are positioned to represent you on projects of any size, while treating your project(s) with the same degree of respect and attention to detail as we have with our own.
